Today you start your adventure with a flight from Vancouver to Port Hardy. Transfer from the Port Hardy airport and board your water taxi for a scenic 30-minute boat ride to our beautiful lodge perched on a rocky sea cliff. There we’re likely to spot Humpback whales, harbor seals, and perhaps even Orcas!.
In the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest at the mouth of Knight Inlet, lies an island chain called the Broughton Archipelago, renowned not only for its physical beauty but also for its proximity to some of the best wildlife viewing on the British Columbia coast. A jewel in this archipelago is Berry Island, most of which lies protected as part of a British Columbia marine conservation area due to its unique natural and cultural history. To the west of the lodge, in the “front yard”, literally just minutes from the lodge, are the waters of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound, which offer some of the best marine mammal viewing in the world. Humpback whales make a highly consistent annual migration from breeding and calving grounds in Hawaii to the waters off northeastern Vancouver Island to feed on bountiful herring and krill from May through November.
Benji Tip: If you are coming off the East Coast, you’ll naturally be up early. Splurge for a big breakfast at the hotel, or if you’d prefer a lighter option, The Galiano Cafe in the South Terminal has great breakfast options after you check in for your flight. The South Terminal is small and easy to navigate which makes check-in a breeze.
ACTION REQUIRED: You must take the airport shuttle from the Fairmont / International Terminal to the South Terminal of the Vancouver International Airport which runs approximately every 40 minutes. Make sure you take the shuttle early enough to arrive at the South Terminal a minimum of 60 minutes prior to your scheduled flight departure time. You MUST be checked in for your flight a minimum of 60 minutes before the scheduled flight.

Day 3 – Bear Viewing Adventure
In the “‘backyard”’ is the southern Great Bear Rainforest with some of the most spectacular and wild river systems on the BC coast. Our lodge lies within the southern boundary of the Great Bear Rainforest, which, at 6.4 million hectares, is about the size of Ireland. The Great Bear Rainforest is home to both Grizzly and Black bears.
Today focuses on a full day bear viewing adventure to one of the main Grizzly viewing estuaries with sights either from either a zodiac or on foot depending on the tide. Bear sightings are either by small zodiacs or on foot, seeking out bears at eye level in their natural habitat – viewing platforms are not used!. The focus is not on the number of bears but on the quality of the bear viewing experience, which can result in intimate and special on-the-ground encounters with Grizzly bears in remote estuaries.*

Today choose between a bear ecology safari, a more extensive exploration of the incredibly rich waters of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound on a marine tour, or a coastal exploration or sea kayaking adventure in the Broughton Archipelago.

Should I be concerned about motion sickness on this extension?
This extension does utilize 10 passenger boats and small zodiacs to access wildlife viewing opportunities. While these boat trips are in sheltered waters (not the open ocean), we do advise those prone to motion sickness to bring medications just in case.
Can I customize my itinerary?
Yes, once at the lodge you’ll be briefed on the activities on offer at the lodge itself aside from the daily excursions and the lodge manager will tailor in more or less time for activities such as: hot soaks, forest bathing, nature walks, swim club (yes, its cold), sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, extra down time to relax, etc.

While in Ashville we walked by the gallery and admired the artwork and told Cassidy how an African Safari was on our bucket list. She told us how they lead these Safaris and as we quickly learned more, we booked the trip and included some close friends who also wanted to go on a trip like this. My wife and I have traveled throughout the US and Europe but mostly on solo trips. This African Safari was our first organized tour and we were apprehensive of who will be on the trip. The trip itself was VERY well organized and our leader Fro was outstanding. I think we were an easy group, but he was not frazzled by anything. All of the lodges were right where the action was, and we could often see wildlife right out of our room. Our driver guides were outstanding and both informative and entertaining. It was also a truly incredible experience. The team that led us up the mountain were very experienced and that helped me feel safe. On summit night I started to feel the altitude and was concerned I wasn’t going to be able to make it but our guides knew what to do and continued to check on me to make sure I was still in a place to safely finish the climb. Our driver guide was exceptional, just like the ones in Kenya and Tanzania The gorilla piece in the picturesque Volcanos' National Park was safe and well organized, utilizing trackers, rangers and porters. Groups of 8-10 people were shepherded into the forest to encounter families of mountain gorillas. We were within several yards of them! On the way back we visited the Dianne Fossey/Ellen Degeneres Museum. While in Rwanda, WALLSbout arranged for a visit to the Leafe youth center (art, music and dance to promote educational opportunities for local youth), a tour of the genocide museum in Kigali, a visit to a local village, a dance performance at the Amarembo resort. Dancing and singing is how they express welcome in those countries.
All in all, it was an exotic blend of nature and culture that exceeded our expectations. Add to that a great bunch of fellow travelers.

There were two amazing and spectacular parts of this trip. The first was the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, and the second was how well we were taken care of throughout the trip without a single letdown or missed step.
Vancouver and the Rocky Mountaineer were really good and a fine way to start the trip. The train experience was so comfortable, the food was surprisingly good, and the crew was really knowledgeable and friendly. For me the experience became so beautiful as soon as we reached Alberta and particularly Lake Louise and Banff. It was like nothing I had ever seen before including my time in the western US Rockies, and Lake Louise is the most beautiful place I have visited in my life. The chateaus where we stayed were like nowhere else I have stayed in my vacations.
I can't say enough about the WallsAbout team. Benjamin was with us since this was the company's first trip to Canada, and that made the trip very personal for me. I was so impressed with Kate who was in charge of the administrative aspect, and everything was perfect from our luggage in our rooms before we arrived to keeping us on track so that we always knew the next step. The WallsAbout staff prepared us very well before the trip and were so friendly; they have set a really high bar for future trips.
I took this trip right after my retirement, and I was touched that they had a celebration cake for me in mid-trip. This was a really nice touch in a tour that had so many. I strongly recommend this tour.
